My Complete Step-By-Step Guide
This is meant to be a step by step guide based on my experience of soft-modding the Xbox. Overall I don't have much money, and so my experiences are based off the cheapest possible way to try and do it.
| Missing image Icon-admonition-note.png Note | The method described below is (mostly) based on using a genuine Xbox Memory Unit (http://www.xbox.com.au/com_au/downloads/pdf/Memory_Unit_manual.pdf) attached to one of the expansion slots on the Xbox Controller (http://assets.xbox.com/en-us/HardwareManuals/Controller.pdf), and then connecting the controller to your (Windows) PC with a suitable adapter cable. |

I started off by buying an Xbox. I bought mine second hand from 'GameStation' for ÃÂã80 and also got 4 games with it. Next I had to buy a Xbox -> PC cable, which I got from my Local 'Game' store for ÃÂã7. You can build your own if you want, but this way was easier and in the end, cost about the same. But by building your own you are going to get XBX -> USB and USB -> XBX. I ended up building one aswell.
What to build greatly depends on what you can get your hands on. If you can beg, steal, or borrow (or buy) an Xbox Memory Unit, this is the best option, as it is most dependable, and the XBX -> USB cable is easier to get hold of. If not, then try and get ahold of as many different USB memory sticks as possible, and the USB -> XBX cable, as these often don't work.

For a more in-depth guide on creating the cables, go HERE (http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xbox_Linux_USB_HOWTO). (Please note that when building my cable, The cable colours were completely different, but this seems to be an isolated case.)

Once you have got this all ready, head over here and get Softmod Installer Deluxe (This is a BitTorrent Download, you will need to get bittorent to download.) HERE (http://www.mininova.org/tor/9584)
SID is a brilliant piece of software that allows you to mod your xbox easily.
Next get the software from Action Replay, or Mega X Key, or anything else designed to get games from your PC to a device. Get this how you want, and then install it.
If using the XBX -> USB method then head over HERE (http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Archive/xbcd.htm) and get the drivers and install as instructed.
- Attach an Xbox Controller (using an official one is best.)
- A new USB device will be found. Install the Xbox Controller driver you downloaded. Then Install Action Replay.
- Attach the Xbox Memory Unit (http://www.xbox.com.au/com_au/downloads/pdf/Memory_Unit_manual.pdf) to your controller. Another USB device will be found. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
- Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." and click Next.
- Select "Have Disk" and find the directory where you installed Action Replay, Go into the Drivers directory and select "xbreader.inf" click Ok and then Next.
- Once the driver has installed click finish.
If that dosn't work, then try this (You can get USBView from HERE (http://www.usbman.com/Drivers%20and%20Patches.htm#N%20-%20Z)):
- Using explorer find the Action Replay Directory, go into the Drivers directory and open "xbreader.inf" in notepad.
- Scroll down until you find the header "[_Devices]" below this you should see five lines like this "%S_DeviceDesc1%=_Install1, USB\VID_040B&PID_6520".
- Load up USBVIEW.exe and look at the tree on the left, there should be an item called "Microsoft Integrated USB Hub" with a device connected on port 1 called "XBCD Xbox Gamepad".
- On port 2 or 3 of this same device it should say "DeviceConnected" click on this.
- Loads of data should pop up on the right all you need to look at is the "idVendor:" and "idProduct:"
- Go back to "xbreader.inf" and copy and paste one of the lines mentioned in part 3.
- First look at "idVendor:" copy the hexadecimal number that follows it without the "0x" bit and paste this over the last four characters of "VID_040B".
- Then look at "idProduct:" copy the hexadecimal number that follows it without the "0x" bit and paste this over the last four numbers of of "PID_6520".
- Save and retry the origonal instructions.
Now take the softmod installer deluxe files in an explorer window and open up Action Replay or whatever you are using. Drag the files into the 'PC Database' area. They should show up, then drag them into the Memory Card area. You may have to do this several times, as the card may not be big enough to transfer them all at once.
Now run the game you have (One of Splinter Cell, Mechassult or 007) and open up the gamesave, now you will get an install screen, backup, then install the softmod and one dash (I like EvoX myself), and then reboot. You will have a new cool dashboard!
