FreeBSD Support
I tried to click on the FreeBSD on XBOX links in the Wiki and couldn't get to either of the pages. Not sure if this is temporary or not. I went to the official FreeBSD page (http://www.freebsd.org/platforms/xbox.html) and it points to http://www.xbox-bsd.nl/ for the The FreeBSD/xbox project. Not sure if the old links should be removed but I am requesting that at least this new link be added.

How do i take linux off of my xbox?
XBOX Linux. Web Browser??
OK. I haven't installed linux yet. But i heard that it doesnt have a web browser like IE or Firefox or Dillo.. something like that.. I heard that you must use VNC to connect to a different computer and use it's resources.
Is VNC true? Or does the linux have a web browser with it?? If so. Is it Genoo?? Or what?

rdesktop disappeared from v1.1
I've noticed that rdesktop has disappeared from the Xebian v1.1.0 As a complete newbie to Linux, I wondered if anybody had any simple instructions on how to get this extremely useful facility back?
"Xbox Linux BIOS is a ROM image that completely replaces the original Microsoft ROM. It can boot Linux from CD/DVD or hard disk and works on all known Xbox versions (http://www.xbox-linux.org/Xbox_Versions_HOWTO) bersions. Xbox versions"
See the typo near the end "bersions" you need to change it to "version" :).
Also here is a mirror of the Slothbox ISO 1.2 my friend hosts on a 256KB upload server.

Installing Linux without affecting original MS Dashboard?
Hi there,
I wonder if someone could advise me. I have a 200gig hard drive, so enlarged G: and F: partitions. I also have a Xecuter 3 mod chip which supports multiple bios's. Would it be possible to install linux onto my F: partition, and install the cromwell bios onto my mod chip. So I can just throw the switch and boot linux. I want to do this so that I do not affect my original xbox menu system as I use xbox live. In theory this sounds right. I am unsure how I would do the install of linux.
Please email me on jd.warrick@virgin.net
Regards
John
Sounds right to me, if you can install the cromwell bios on your chip so that you can switch to the cromwell bios you should then be able to boot from one of the xbox linux distro's, the xebian install instructions on this site are very good, although i'd say it's probably not the best version of linux for a newbie...I do use it very effectively on my xbox though.
As long as you install to a part of your hard drive that is not used by your MS dash then it should not have any adverse affects.

Where to get an Xbox Suse linux distribution?
Hello guys, I have a mod installed with cromwell as bios. How to install suse linux (8.2) or (9.2) i have both versions on cds.
I understand i have to odifed these original versions to be able to run on xbox, but how to do it?

Is keyboard needed?
I currently do not have a USB-keyboard, so am I able to do anything with the X-box controller?
- A USB Keyboard is not required. The Xbox controller can be used as a mouse and Xebian, Gentoox and X-DSL all come with a virtual (on screen) keyboard which you can use to input text when necessary. --Friedgold 12:12, 26 Aug 2005 (PDT)
Gentoo for Xbox
The download link for Gentoo (not Gentoox) appears broken, and it is unclear whether or not, like Gentoox, it is compatible with the software method (the wiki for it implies that it isn't). --Maru
- It was broken for me too. I've linked to the Gentoo mirrors where the CD can be downloaded. As for if it's compatible with the software method I don't know. Being "compatible with the software method" means that the bootloader is signed using a private key known only to a few xbox-linux developers. The documentation on the Gentoo for Xbox (http://gentoo-wiki.com/Gentoo_for_Xbox) page of the Gentoo Wiki (http://gentoo-wiki.com/) makes no mention of the software method, suggesting to me that the bootloader hasn't been signed. Does anyone know for sure either way? --Friedgold 16:16, 6 Sep 2005 (PDT)
Raincoat link outdated
Could someone please remove the Raincoat download link from this page? SF.net already has 0.10.
- Thanks for pointing this out. I've changed the raincoat section so the download links to the sourceforge site. --Friedgold 14:13, 12 Sep 2005 (PDT)
Slackware on Xbox (sXb)
Personally, Slackware is my favorite distro on computer. If you want to try it out on your Xbox, here are the links:

Xebian help - Adding Icons/Shortcuts
Hi
Does anyone know how to do this?? It's drivin' me crackers!
Thanks
Note about Xcalibur compatibility
Perhaps a note about how compatible Xebian, etc. are with the Xcalibur video encoder chip would be appropriate. Sure, it is compatible, but it certainly isn't really functional enough for most uses.
Need to add xUbuntu distribution link
A link needs to be added to http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/XUbuntu - this is xUbuntu's wiki page.

Big Project!
Hi All,
I got a project at hand! I have 50 xbox's and like to put X-DSL on it native. X-DSL start automaticaly, and starts XAMPP for linux! Apache/php/mysql. And the xbox login automatically.
That is wath i managed to do.
Now the tricky part.
Then a web brownser must start up automatically and open the page localhost. Then the web page must go in kiosk mode (no statusbar or navigator buttons!) And the web brownser must play movies like mpg en avi, so plugins must be installed!
Can anybody help me with this! I want to pay for it! This is a big project and like to make it work!! A few honderd euro is for anybody that coms with a x-dsl distrubution that those this, or a script.
Best regards,
Ivan

Xebian - OpenGL
You might want the OpenGL drivers on Xebian, so you can run OpenGL based programs. There's no hardware support for xbox graphics card, so software emulation only. It's slow, but you might need it anyway.
Before we install OpenGL, it is important to make sure your packages are up to date. There are several that come missing / old with the default install of Xebian.
Firstly, there is an issue with updating to the latest stable Debian release direct from Xebian, so we need to get around this by making sure we only get packages from the Sarge release of Debian (There is ways around this of course, but its well beyond the scope of this)
Open your /etc/apt/sources.list ("vi /etc/apt/sources.list" in the console) as root ("su" in the console, then your password - xebian by default)
Then replace any instances of "stable" with "sarge"
Save the document and close (Control+C, : , wq , [Enter])
"apt-get update" in the console
"apt-get upgrade" in the console
"apt-get dist-upgrade" in the console
At each point installing / updating any packages as needed
on a console do this:
su
[password]
apt-get update
apt-get install xlibmesa-gl xlibmesa-dri
vim /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
{
-use the down-arrow key to find the line: Section "Module"
-press INSert key (insert mode)
-add the 2 lines:
Load "dri" Load "glx"
after the Load "type1" line
}
shutdown -h now
The XBox will shut down now. Next time you start it, open a console and type "glxgears" (without quotes). You should see OpenGL gears now!
Keywords:
XBox, OpenGL, GLX, MESA, libgl1-mesa-glx
Overscan on 1.6 Xboxs
There is currently no way to stop the overscan on version 1.6 Xboxs. This is due to the video encoder being changed by Microsoft to an Xcalibur. There is currently no available documentation to this chip. The only way to get around this issue is by using an Xbox prior to version 1.6
Mounting a Pendrive
Mounting a USB pendrive under Xebian is easy.
Firstly, make a directory called usbdrive under /mnt/ (mkdir /mnt/usbdrive in console)
Secondly mount the drive to this: ($mount -o loop /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbdrive)
"sda1" may be different on your system depending on your drive setup. Its easy to cd into each one, use "ls" to view the contents to find the correct one.
