Warranty Issues
Microsoft's claim that the warranty is voided is partially incorrect with respect to XBoxes sold in the United States. If you open the box then you would void the warranty to the extent of whatever you changed. The U.S. Federal law, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which was passed in 1975, covers these provisions, which if a manufacturer offers any warranty at all they must comply with and cannot evade. A manufacturer is under no obligation to offer a warranty in the first place, but once they put one in writing there are certain provisions they are required to comply with.
If you replace or change a component, only to the extent that component is changed, is your warranty voided. For example, if you have an automobile, and you replace the exhaust system to put in an enhanced exhaust with, say, additional air cooling, you void the warranty on the exhaust system. You do not void the warranty on the engine, the brakes, the air conditioner, the radio or any other part not changed.
As Microsoft is not giving any warranty on the software anyway, it is arguable that a software change does not affect the machine and thus the warranty should still apply unless it can be claimed the software in some fashion damaged the hardware.
Some states have additional protections; from the FTC's website: "Some states do not allow you to sell consumer products "as is." At this time, these states are Alabama, Connecticut, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. In those states, sellers have implied warranty obligations that cannot be avoided."
People from California should check out the Song-Beverly Consumer Protection Act for additional information in their state, for example
how do you downgrade the xbox dashboard when it has already got xbox live on it?
You must add a download of the older version through telnet. Explained here: Software Method HOWTO
Comment: The dirty little secret that's not mentioned on this site (at least that I could find) is that downgrading the XBox dashboard is like having a drink of water from the Holy Grail -- the procedure is trivially simple but FINDING an older dashboard to install is next to impossible.
I'm really interested in getting linux onto my xbox. I have the action replay software setup on my pc, an xbox controller hooked up to the pc with the memory card in the controller. I know it works because I have put many savegames onto the memory card this way. My problem is that I cannot find the savegames I need. I tried using the tutorial that explains how to get the needed savegames with all the zipping, original folder, updated folder, udata, etc. None of it is working. Please help!
- Try the Simplified Action Replay HOWTO, it has links to the good Action Replay saved game files as well as simplified instructions.
What partitions/formats can a hardware modded cromwell xbox understand? Is it safe to swap a FAT32/NTFS drive in? Can Ed's Debian install on such a drive by repartitioning after it is in the xbox?
- Yes, once the BIOS is modded, linux will repartition and reformat the drive before it installs. It is safe to do so all inside the xbox.
Why is everything green in Xebian? I use a Monster Component Cable
- Use a regular single yellow RCA and the regular cable and see if the problem goes away. If so its most likley a config file/driver issue. What version of Xebian did you install? Is your xbox 1.5 or higher? Try the IRC room as well for more detailed, personalized help.
- Monster cables are no better than normal component cables, they simply cost more. The true Linux geek does not pay into ripoffs.
What does the Xbox version mean (for upgrades like hard drives and mod chips) and does it affect the installation of Linux.
Modchips: Every manufacturer knows what Xboxes their modchips are compatible with. Besides, we do not recommend modchips unless you have a version 1.6 Xbox.
Hard disks: No effect.
(Also see here)
Where can i find the right savegame?
- Which one? The MechAssault savegame is linked to in the Software Method HOWTO. The ones for Action Replay are linked to in the Simplified Action Replay HOWTO (http://www.xbox-linux.org/Simplified_Action_Replay_HOWTO).
Does it matter which video output cable I use?
- The video connector defines 8 possible video cables:
| 0x00 | SCART | supported |
| 0x01 | HDTV | supported (see Xbox HDTV HOWTO) |
| 0x02 | VGA | supported for "Conexant" Xboxes (see Xbox VGA HOWTO) |
| 0x03 | RFU | unknown? |
| 0x04 | S-Video | supported |
| 0x05 | undefined | - |
| 0x06 | standard | supported |
| 0x07 | missing/disconnected | - |
- TODO: add possible resolutions to table
When I boot up Xebian on the xbox it doesn't ask for a user name or password, why is that?
- You are automatically logged in as user "live" (password "live"). You can log out and log in again as user "root" (password "xbox"), or type "su" and the password on the command line to become root.
We already know that you can't have the Xbox Live Menu, and the Linux menu on the same Dashboard, Can you install Linux if you already have the Xbox Live Menu, or does it have to be a fresh Dashboard without the Xbox Live Menu?
- The Dashboard version needs to be < D1.00.5659, i.e. D1.00.4920 or below (look in "About Xbox"). Version 4920, which is okay, already has the menu item, for example.
If I was to install linux on to my xbox, would I still be able to play games over a network without the use of xbox live?
Yes, I think. It's my understanding that Live doesn't work on modded Xboxes because the Live Servers actively ban your gamertags if you are running a modded Xbox, as people could use a modded Xbox to hack up an online game and exploit the gameplay... I.E., make them invicible, give them unlimited ammo, etc.
A normal network game isn't, of course, connected to Live, so the Live Servers can't do anything to your Xbox.
A2: Yes, you can, as long as you use the software method, or use an "xbox bios" ie, one that allows the playing of xbox games atall. Using the software method, Linux boots from the CD or hard drive the same as any xbox game. If connected to LIVE, you will be instantly banned (though on Halo2 you can still play custom games on live, just not matchmaking MOST of the time) if using ANY modded content. LIVE now actually checks your hard drive for modded files. If you use linux, you WILL be banned, however, it does not affect network play atall. Pops
When the system starts up after loading the linux software it goes to the auto-login screen then comes up with an SMBus Collision error?? Why??
- Ths USB sometimes gives bugs on first boot. Can you still get into the OS?
Can i run grub on xbox?
Technically, xbeboot is built off grub, so many people are in fact already using it ;)
However I'm guessing that's not quite what you were looking for. In reality, if you want multi-boot, download cromwell. Inside this is a piece of software called "xromwell", which will allow you do choose between boot methods
I have updated my dashboard with the Xbox Live menu. Is there any whay which i could get rid of it to install linux? (ie. use the hard drive reset code)
- You need to downgrade your dashboard to a version that allow you to run the linux install. The Dashboard version needs to be < D1.00.5659, i.e. D1.00.4920 or below (look in "About Xbox"). Version 4920, which is okay, already has the menu item, for example.
hey i read x-box can read CD-RW dics there burnable
okay i read that you can play CR-RW dics on your x-box box does this mean i can just burn linux to it to this and run linux? stop repeating youreself
oh and NO dont u think we would have tried that, u burn it on to a RW disk anyway but u still need to do the mod or the xbox will not understand
Most XBoxes can read CD-RWs, it is CD-Rs that may or may not work. Regardless, burning Xebian on a CD-RW is useless without either the software or hardware modification.
Yes, you must have a mod of some kind installed (soft or hard,) but once that is done you can run Linux from a live CD. Many distros support this, Damn small linux being one. And some xboxes will run ANY type of media (mine personally runs pretty much anything i put in it without any modification to the drive: CD-Rs work just fine) you just have to test them out and see what happens.
BUT, what if my CD/DVD can no longer read discs.. is is still possible to install linux. is it possible to copy the installer to the HD and run it from there?
Yes. use the software method with a memory card/action replay.
Permission Denied
I installed linux on the xbox and I made a cd with a psx emulator and a game on it, when I put it in the xbox and try and open the emulator in linux it says permission denied. Does anybody know how to fix this?
Have you settings in fstab been set to allow executing binary files on mounted cd/dvds?
Had Xbox Live already
I want to try to do the Xbox Linux project with a memory unit. I have Xbox Live on it and don't care for it anymore. Problem is my dvd drive won't detect any type of game/cd/dvd says not recognized. I want to use it for websurfing since I can't game on it anymore. Help
A: If you can find a way to install Cromwell on the XBox BIOS, you could put the XBox hard drive into a PC, install Linux, and return the drive to the XBox. The clincher is, how to install Cromwell without using the optical drive. Borrow a working DVD drive from a buddy's XBox (of similar vintage)? Modchip, maybe? Good luck.
Cromwell on 1.6 Xboxes?
Does the Cromwell bios work on 1.6 Xboxes?
Yes, but you will have to put in on a modchip. The chip in the XBox isn't flashable anymore.
SOFTWARE METHOD
I have been onto xbox live but didnt play beacuse when i had went on to it but my subscriber had run out so it did not allow me to go on and play . So will the software method still work ??
depends if it updated your dashboard
Do all device drivers come installed with the xbox or just the factory's hardware specific ones?
A: Drivers for what? The kernel supplied with the XBox Linux distros from this site have drivers for all of the hardware built into the XBox, as well as for most basic accessories (keyboards, mice, flash cards, USB hubs, etc.). If you want to connect something more interesting to your XBox, like a webcam, TV tuner, or printer, you'll have to see if a Linux driver even exists for the device, then figure out if any of the distros here were compiled with that driver. If not, you may need to download new kernel sources, patch them for XBox, patch and/or configure for your device, and start compiling (a formidable task). Good luck.
Compatible USB Floppy Drives and Flash Drives
Is there a list of compatible USB floppy and flash drives, as well as other USB products, such as cameras.
If you need a list of USB devices to transfer the MechAssault files, you can find it here (http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/XboxUsbCompatibilityList).
If you need a list of USB devices that run under Linux, then you can try and look over here (http://www.linux-usb.org/). I've had both a USB 1.1 (128 MB) and USB 2.0 (256 MB) Lexar Secure JumpDrive work with Xebian, though obviously at USB 1.1 speed only.
Xebian live cd
I've heard that you can run linux (Xebian) on xbox from a burned cd without any xbox modification. If I use this CD will I still be able to use xbox live and not get in trouble?
You can run Xebian without any HARDWARE modification. You would still have to use the Mechassault trick. An XBox straight from the store will NOT run Xebian. You can't use XBox Live if you use the software trick, however.
...unless you use the "restore dashboard" that comes with the Mechassault package. This should return the dashboard to normal.
NO, I had this correct the first time. If you do the "restore dashboard" save method, you remove your ability to run Linux. Certainly, you could then go online with XBox Live, but your dashboard will/would be updated and would no longer allow you to use the MechAssault trick! And don't think you'll be savvy and unplug the cable as soon as your XBox starts to download the update: "newer" games will update your Dashboard too, and they won't give you a download warning since the disc itself has the update. If you still want the ability to use XBox Live and run Linux, you'll have to get a modchip and make sure the modchip is off when you go on XBox Live.
CROMWELL BIOS 2.31
Hi. My modchip came with XBOX LINUX CROMWELL BIOS 2.31 and my friend got one before me that came with a different version of Cromwell, but he easily put Evox on his xbox and I can't seem to upgrade the bios on mine. My friend said that I had to make a bios cd and upgrade it that way, but when I make the cd, it says, "Checking for Linuxboot.cfg" and then when it can't find the file, it says halted. I tried following some of the tutorials at other sites, but nothing seems to work. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
A: Sorry, bud, but that sounds like an issue with your mod chip. You might try contacting the chip maker, or maybe cruising the XBox Scene site. Once you get that squared away and want to get Linux installed, we'll be here. Good luck.
Cromwell bios 2.31
How do I get rid of it? It won't let me reflash it and it keeps wanting to load linux.
A: That's what Cromwell does best! Check with your chip maker - they may be able to help you get the chip into a flash-able state. Good luck.
XBOX and networking
Once Linux is running will the XBOX connect through a network with other computers--Mac, Linux or WIndows? Is it possible to remotely write to the XBOX hard drive? - Paul; ein_grosses_pils@yahoo.com
A: Linux makes an excellent network operating system - anything from a simple web client to a web-based application server. And yes, by using a package like Samba, your XBox can function as a file server for your Mac and Windows clients, so that they can save files to your XBox hard drive.
I have MechAssault and a 64mb nomad muvo file storage device and also the Keybaord usb adapter but where are the files I need to put into my nomad???
A: There's a link around here somewhere for an Action Replay savegame tutorial. That document contains files you could use for this. Good luck!
Where can i find a list of commands for the console in linux?
there are like a million commands.. where can i find a list telling me each of the console commands, and what do they do? try the linux doc project [1] (http://www.tldp.org/)
xbox clicking
my xbox when i turn it on makes a clicking sound coming from the right rear corner. any tips and how do you open it up?
You can open it by using a torx 20 screwdriver. A torx 15 will also work, because it still fits and works. http://teamxecuter.com <-- I have an Xecuter 3!
How do you know what hard drive you have on your xbox?
you can open it and peer inside
Hardware upgrade
Can I add more RAM than 128MB?
- The FAQ says: Additional RAM chips can be soldered into the motherboard to extend RAM to a total of 128 MB.
- Does anyone know a trick to extend the RAM above 128 MB, let's say 512 MB, so you can run linux software that requires 512 Mb?
A) In a word, NO. The xbox has 4 x 16MB chips by default (64MB) they all share address pins i.e pin 1 on 1 chip is electrically the same point as pin 1 on the other 3 chips.
The xbox has 4 positions and ONLY 4 positions free in which you can install extra memory chips. There are 2 free positions on the top side of the motherboard and 2 free on the underneath side.
The free positions are exactly opposite the memory chips installed on the other side of the board, as such any new chips you install must be exactly pin compatible ie 16 MB Chips - pin 1 is pin 1 on the opposite chip and so on.
Hence you are limited to 128MB Maximum.
If you wanted to use Linux software that required so much memory you will probably find that you are limited by the other Xbox hardware limitations i.e throughput on the IDE interface, the poor disc compatability of the Xbox dvd drive, the relatively slow CPU etc etc.
B) You can if you mod your Xbox this way (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_motherboard_replacement).
lost root password
How can I reset the root password for XBox-Linux?
The box is a 1.6 xbox that was software modified to run linux (now loaded on hard drive). It has Xebian (2.4.22 kernel).
The box was modified a year ago, but not used for some 10 months -- mostly because it was suffering from the reboot problem on clock reset for not having been plugged in.
Any tips would be appreciated.
Try booting the install cd (live cd), mounting your install, running chroot on the directory you've mounted it to, and then running passwd to set a new password. - Jesu
tainted xbox
my xbox will not download i tried to download it with action replay but when i run linux using mechassault it says i cant, the dashboard file wont work either but when i do the emergency save thing one line says my xbox is tainted WHAT DOES IT MEAN. please use lite terms i am not a computer smart guy sry
USB storage in a camera.
I want to use my camera as the USB storage device but I cant figure out how to put files onto my camera. My computer reads it as a camera and wont let me put stuff on it.
A: most camera's won't work as usb memory
Can I use a 16:9 TV Set for XBox Linux?
Yes it is just like any other tv - Linux will present the image as 640 x 480 to any tv and then the tv will display it. I am personally using Xebian on a Sony 28" widescreen.
Samba with Linux on Xbox
Can I run Samba on Linux for Xbox? This is my primary goal, to create an inexpensive file server.
Yes, I am running samba via Xebian using the samba web admin interface.
-> I am trying to configure my Xebian 1.1.0 on my XBox as a file server using samba, does anyone has any instruction guide on how can I do that? Thanks.
A: All ya gotta do is edit the config file : ). Try checking www.samba.org - they may have an FAQ, or some "known good" config files you can start with. Good luck.
Virtual Desktop
How do I can set-up the size of a virtual desktop? As far as I understood I cannot change the physical 640x480 resolution.
A1: Check your XFree86/Xorg or window manager settings. I think you can still set a "virtual desktop" size that lets you scroll your 640x480 image around as if it were a peephole onto a larger desktop.
A2: Depends on what kind of display you're using. Using the X2VGA and a VGA monitor with XFedora, I can run 800x600 very nicely without scrolling.
I am having making a telnet connection from my PC to an Xbox? How do you configure it physically and through software?
Willie
A1: This is too big of a subject for this forum, I'm afraid. The general outline, though, is to first build an Ethernet network, then install Linux on your XBox, get TCP/IP working for your network, then make any necessary changes to the configuration of the Xbox's startup scripts, inetd, PAM, telnet server, etc. that may be necessary (normally these are ready to go immediately after install), then connect away.
A2: If all of this stuff is in place, and ssh is working but telnet is not, you probably just need to check your settings in /etc/xinetd.conf, /etc/xinetd.d/telnet, or similar. Look for "disabled = yes" and, well, you get the idea. Good luck.
trouble with mechinstaller
hi i have installed the 3 files for the mechinstaller method on my xbox but when i choose emercency linux, it just froze. i updated the dashboard, and tried it again and it went on to the next screen where the black cursor is blank and hit "A" and then it started flashing. I erased the files, re-installed them and tried again and it went back to the first thing to where it would just lock up and not do anything. i looked up info about if it started flashing and it said that i would have an xbox manufactured since august of 2003 (ver. 1.4+ xbox's) but mine was made in november of 2002 and now it doesnt do the flashing thing. please help me.
yes I am having the same issue
I think I had a similar problem when I setup my xbox a year ago - try doing the 'restore dashboard' option first, then 'install linux'... - Jesu
I have the same problem but how do you restore the dashboard if you select it and then the screen just blinks - tom
wifi
would it be possible to add a wifi card over the usb? if so, which ones would actually work?
A. I would think so while running Linux. You would need to download the drivers for the card.
Linux via dashboard
Hi! Id like to know if its possible to modify the linux install in such way that i can start it thruu the dashboard and then exit it back to the dashboard?
You can start it via dashes, but not return to them, without a reboot. The MS kernel has been mapped out of ram when linux starts - there's no way to return to it, like you could with a normal XDK-based app.
Can XBOX play midi files?
Before buying an XBOX and modifying it can anybody tell me whether an XBOX running Linux can play midifiles?
Answer: Use a linux compatible audio player, it works fine.
Do you Need Xbox linux to play burned games if you already have a mod Chip?
Do you Need Xbox linux to play burned games if you already have a mod Chip installed?
Answer: No. Mod chips get the job done.
action replay
i installed linux w/ action replay and it said install restore dashboard so i did and it said insallation failed your "dashboard partition may be currupted" and when i use emergency linux it says "sh: cant access tty: job control turned off" what do i do????How do you get linux from action replay installed to your xbox???
ozx memory stick explorer
how do u get ozx memory to recognize my usb memory stick. i have a sandisk 256 and ozx say "NO FatX at drive"
If your mem stick isn't formatted as FATX, then you need to start up your XBox to Microsoft's dashboard and insert your memstick. THe Dashboard will say the disk has been damaged and has been reformated. BE ADVISED: all of your data previously on your mem stick WILL be gone!
Holiday X-Box
Do the X-Boxes that were released around Christmas 2004 with Star Wars: Clone Wars and Tetris have the same version?
I don't know about the 2004 Holiday Bundle, but most of the 2003 Holiday Bundles XBoxes *should* be v1.4 like mine (mine was made in Aug 2003).
how do I know if its the right mech assault
How do I know if its the right mech assault and Is there other games I can use
would linux work on ps2?
Answers: use the original mechassualt, not the platinum. I advise buying used or renting one from blockbuster.
Sony made their own linux for the PS2 It isn't available in the US anymore.
Remote controll
Hello! can you control Linux on your x-box with the remote control or do you have to have mouse and keyboard?
A: Xbox controller ports are just standard usb ports. You can buy/make an adapter and plug a keyboard and mouse into your Xbox.
Is it possible to map the enter button on the remote control to the click command on the Linux desktop?
unable to load<Install Linux>
When i go to champaign and go to install linux i get this error: Unable to load <Install Linux> press A to continue, so i press A and nothing!!!
seems to me they avoid answering this question.... i'm looking for an answer to it myself
antistaticrage@yahoo.com.
I had this problem too and it turns out I had the wrong version of the game - it had been patched. Mechassault serial # MS02308L-MS-L1 is BAD; MS02301L-MS-L1 is GOOD. (The serial is a hologram on the inside ring of the disc) For MA, it's not just the platinum hits that has been patched, it's also the holiday bundle one.
> Also, be sure to delete previous game saves of Mech Assualt BEFORE copying over the "hacked" one.
Computer games
Can I install regular computer games and then play them on my XBOX after I do the software conversion?
A1: yes suree
A2: That depends on how you define "regular". You can install and play Linux games. With some help from WINE you can play many Windows games. With a console or DOS emulator (MAME, or an SNES emu of some kind) you can play extracted images of old console games, or some of your DOS faves. If you want to play the latest and greatest 3D hi-res FPS, though, you'd be better off either buying a separate PC or leaving your XBox un-modded (or soft-modded) and buying XBox titles.
I got Quake III Arena working on my box just fine under linux.
XBOX hARD DRIVE
I have the xbox which I believe is version 1.1. My question is that about 3 Months ago It kept coming up with error code 7. I called Microsoft and they stated I would have to send it back for Service(99.00 Dollars). I decided it would be almost the same price for a new one. In the meen time I decided to tear it apart and see if something was wrong and sure enough one of the chips on the hard drive was burned. I tried to replace with another hard drive that I had formatted using linux and it does try to work but comes up with error code 16. I have done a lot of reading in referance to the tsop and my problem would be how to get a boot sector for a good hard drive or a copy of the original xbox fatx. If anybody has an idea please let me know. If not I will be buying a used one to copy the hard drive for use in the old one. Then I guess Ill use tthis one for a linux Box. I have hot swapped numerous cmos chips on computer boards but the tsop is just way to small. any Ideas for flashing this tsop. Thanks for any help
Larry Stanton LUV3198@PTD.NET
This is the only way I've seen - http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/recover-locked-hd.php
This sounds hard!
Ok I read all of that I think. I'm just trying to get this straight. You don't have to,but it would probably be better to upgrade to a bigger harddrive(which I don't know how to do) and than you have to download and burn a CD/RW of Linux. I just want to be able to have games on my Xbox and throw in a couple of cheats. Would that still take Linux? And if we send our Xbox in to you you'll do everything for "FREE" come on there has to be a catch to that. Does shipping cost like $120 or something. Anyway write me back and explain please.
Thanks
If you're trying to run backup games, then you don't need Linux: you will need to go over to XBox-Scene (http://www.xbox-scene.com) and look into getting a BIOS that runs backup games. Neither the MechAssault trick nor Cromwell will run backup games.
remote acces
Is there a way of controlling my xbox through my windows pc using vnc viewer or another network client program?
A1: You can telnet into your XBox while running Emergency Linux, or possibly even Xebian (I haven't tried it). Then you would have access to your XBox's command prompt and can do anything necessary from there.
A2: If you're trying to control a Linux session running on the XBox, then yes, VNC server(s) are available for Linux. Most distros support Xwindows, telnet, and Secure Shell out of the box. If you want to control a non-Linux, retail XBox game remotely, then of course not, since Linux would not be running.
Windows
How can I run Windoe "XX" on linux??
A: You can run Windows applications on Linux using a package called WINE. If you want to run a Windows operating system on top of Linux (for example to virtualize hardware), you might look into VMWare. If you want to run a Windows OS on top of Linux on the XBox specifically, save yourself the trouble and buy a used PC.
Xbox is dead
My question is simple. How do I open the xbox console ? I do not see any screws.
A1: screws r under the ruber bads and the sticker
A2: After you break two or three fingernails peeling back the rubber feet, you'll need a Torx T20 driver to remove the screws. And of course, this voids your warranty (don't say we didn't tell you!).
TSOP erasing
My TSOP starts to erase but the progress bar doesn't move. I've tried this on four different Xboxen and only one works (a v1.1). The other three are v1.4 and all Winbond W49F020T TSOP chips (I think). What should I do?
One of two things are happening: either you're not soldered properly (double check the soldering), or you're trying to burn the wrong size image onto the TSOP. On Xbox 1.0 and 1.1, you have to use the 1024Kb image, as it's a 1Mb chip. If you "underburn" it with the 256Kb image, you've probably screwed up the bootability of that chip, and the partial status bar you saw would be a good indication of that. The converse is true, if you try to "overburn" a 256Kb TSOP with a 1024Kb image, the system will complain. Use the read parameter in raincoat first to copy the old image out, in case the write gives bad results. Here's the command for that:
$ raincoat -r old_image.bin This reads the TSOP contents to a file named old_image.bin
The size of the file should tell you the image you SHOULD use to burn to it. If you can still boot the Xbox, you're probably fine. Get the proper image file and burn it according to the HW modification (http://www.xbox-linux.org/Hardware_Method_HOWTO) instructions. If not, you're going to have to turn to someone more gifted technically to reprogram the TSOP with the proper image.
a
actually i think it has to do with that flash chip not erasing properly. I am currently having the same problems, but it is my understanding that raincoat can flash these chips, just not evox. thats why the progress bar doesnt move, as the chip doesnt erase when told.
Burning in Xbox Linux?
Can u burn CDs/DVDs in Xbox-Linux?
answer:You could try to uninstall the DVD-rom drive, and put in a cd-rw drive. I don't think this is possible, but it is worth an attempt.
answer2: You can replace the DVD drive with a CD burner, DVD burner, etc. The real problem occurs if you still want to play XBox games: only the original drives can access original XBox Game Disks. So, if you've done the hardware method and aren't playing XBox games, why not switch it out for something else? If you've used the MechAssault trick, you'll need to leave it alone. The Hard drive can be changed, regardless.
not sure if this is covered...
not because i didn't look, but because i am basically an idiot. could i run Linspire on the xbox linux... software method?
You need to install a distro of Linux that has been patched to work with an XBox. Please read through all of the documentation first.
X-Box USB 56k Modem
Is it possible with Linux installed, to run a USB 56k Modem for internet/email function? I will be in a remote location which does not offer Broadband and want to save on having to take a PC or notebook.
Email to cybergod@nex.net.au please
REPLY=> If you can get it working on a normal linux machine you'll be fine on the xbox. You'll need to find linux drivers for your usb modem, which will be hard. Linux has (next to) no support for usb dialup modems, or pci for that matter
A2: It might also be possible to use a USB-to-serial converter, with a regular RS-232-based external modem. The Linux kernel CAN be compiled to support a number of these adaptors, but I'm not sure how well such virtual serial ports are supported by pppd, for example. No promises, but it might be doable - try checking the website of an adaptor manufacturer to see if they document such a solution for Linux.
1.0.3 Boot disk stall
Boot disk stalls. The 1.0.3 install ISO is recognized by my XBOX upon boot, but all it lists is the xbox-linux name URL and the penguin never arrives to begin install. I have mini lunux on the xbox that loads properly, so I know upon boot of EVOX on my version 1.0 xbox that the Xebian install should load properly. Is it a matter of the bios loaded off of the Ed's Debian ISO not correct for my version of XBOX (I have read that version 1.0 does not have the correct graphical capabilites in the bios to continue with the install? I am running a softmod, and would like to complete this install without flashing the TSOP. Is there a way I could include a different bios to load into cache off of the ed's debian boot cd so that the install might begin. Any recommendations?
Latest version of xbox live blocks the software method what can i do?
I wanna translate XBOX games. Where are the language files ?
I wanna to try translate XBOX games with my friends. Is that possible ? Where are the language files and what tool we`ll need ? :)
This has absolutely nothing to do with XBox Linux. I'm not even sure if what you want to accomplish is possible, but no one here will be able to talk to you.
mldonkey and some other deb packages
I have had some luck downloading debian packages and getting them working. Some however have dependency issue which will not upgrade.
I tried to install a distro upgrade but it threatened to remove stuff like freevo.
The main stuff I have been looking to install are bittornado and mldonkey. Although these arent the only ones.
NB. Why did you remove vnc from the distro ? Damn good tool ;-)
I suppose my question really is what can I do when I hit dependency issues. How does Xebian relate to general Debian releases.

software mod
I'm tring to do the software mod for linux. I have the drivers and the computer recongnizes the contoller and it is installed, but the computer will not recongnize the memory unit in the controller. What do I do?
A: The official Xbox Memory Units are formatted with a FATX filesystem that your PC does not understand. Accordingly, the Memory Unit will not appear as a "removable drive" the way most USB flash drives do. You will need to use a utility that speaks FATX. The Action Replay app is a good example of this - please see the excellent AR procedure.
Can I create games using Linux?
You can create Linux games in C, C++, Java, Python, etc. that would run on any Linux machine, but you can not create XBox games. There is a project to create an open free alternative to Microsoft's SDK, but I do not think it is anywhere near done.
OpenXDK appears to be close to being finished, its lacking networking suppourt atm though

action replay
how do I get the linux software on the memory card using action replay?
Thank you Mike Scott
Nashuapak@aol.com
A: RTFM, holmes. There's a link to the Action Replay procedure around here somewhere. The hardest part is making the cable to connect the controller to a Windows PC. Once you've got the cable nailed, it's smooth sailing.
Connecting/Using TV-card
Can I connect a TV-card to the X-box? And use it to record TV programs?
Henrik W. Anthonsen hwa(a)c2i.net
It might be possible to get a USB capture card/TV card, but there will be a couple of problems. First, you will NEED a new hard drive period: 2 gigs will not cut it for video. Secondly, the XBox only supports USB 1.1 FULL Speed, NOT USB 2.0 HIGH Speed. So, the quality of your recordings be towards the lower end of the spectrum (VHS quality, or worse). It might be easier to just stick with a TiVo...
Answer-2. Some DVB usb sticks work quite well (or indeed only) with usb 1.1. All except early nove-usb sticks need a 2.6.x kernel though so only use them if you like a (part or whole) native install.
Hey me too
Im having the same problem witht the box sayin run the restore dashboard then it saying corrupt somthin or other.
Action Replay wont let me use the Mech Installer Image. What can I do?
I download all the MechAssualt files that are needed but then when i go to put them in my action replay memory card it says that the file is an invalid game save. So now i have no way of using those files to put Linux onto my Xbox. Is there some way to bypass this?
Get the correct Saved Game files for Action Replay here, and follow the instructions shown. - Sean Harrington (1stage), 2004-10-21
How do I get rid of the 'xbox live' link on my dashboard?
How do I get rid of the 'xbox live' link on my dashboard?
You don't need to get rid of this link to run Linux. If you do the MechAssault trick, then 'Install Linux' will replace 'XBox Live' with 'Linux' on its own. If you do the "Hardware Modification" with a modchip that selects between Microsoft's BIOS and Cromwell, then you could care less that XBox Linux is an option on the Dashboard.
Xbox Connect
okay, i have a program that lets you play system link over the internet that is connected to ur pc LAN router, if i install a mod chip, can i still play system link over the internet?
If your mod chip has a switch that lets you choose between an alternative Linux friendly BIOS (ex Cromwell) and Microsoft's BIOS, then XBox Connect will work fine. In another words, if you still possess the ability to run XBox games with your mod chip installed, you're good to go. Only Microsoft's XBox Live checks to see if your XBox is modded.
Word of advice: look around the websites you have a question with, look through all of their FAQs. I got the answer to your question from XBox Connect's FAQ here (http://www.xbconnect.com/faq.php).
i know about xbox connect (i hepled beta test it) and yes you can it doesnt matter whats inside the xbox when playing xbox connect just as long as you have a working internet connection, a pc to run it through and a system link compatable game such as halo or project gotham racing2
F: Drive not showing in FTP program anymore.
F: Drive not showing in FTP program anymore
What happen? I cannot put apps in F: anymore. Please advice. Thanks.
A: This is not a good question for this kind of forum. There are about 7.62x10^28 things that could be wrong with your particular XBox. I would guess, though, that since you're asking about your F: drive, you're not running Linux, so this forum is not your best bet. Good luck.
Help?
Can I use the software installation on an XBox bought in October 2004?
Check the Version Xbox Versions HOWTO If it's <1.6 you can.
hey
what settings do i change on the linux settings menu off of the mechassault game...
i cant get the emergency linux or the install xbox to work on my system. and when it tells me to write thuings in.. how am i supposed to since you cant use a keyboard? please email me @ kickthenick45@msn.com
A1: The emergency Linux install starts a telnet daemon. If you'll check the documentation, you'll see the address range you'll need to use temporarily to telnet onto the XBox to answer those prompts, or to begin poking around.
A2: The Xebian install disk provides a graphical keyboard that lets you poke out short commands using the mouse pointer (which can be controlled with the XBox controller).
I havent seen any xbox Linux computers in use. Show me some examples of them at work doing more that reading e mail and what not. Like can i run Tractor dj on it.
A: Since the whole point of XBox-Linux is to run the Linux operating system, the user experience after Linux starts will be the same as with any Linux PC, +/-10%. Linux supports thousands of programs, including some categories of Windows titles (via the WINE package). You might try starting with a generic Linux site like www.linux.org.
Using XBOX as NAS (network storage) ,solution based on Linux
Hi everybody, I was loooking for a way to use my old computer as a NAS by installing Linux on it,and then I remebered that I have modded XBOX with plenty of space, and already filled with video and audio files. The idea is as Xbox doesn't takes a lot of space I could use one for NAS purpose. It is not power hungry(as PC can be),you can buy second hand Xbox for 70$,HD120GB for 80$ and a chip for 30-50$, download a linux for free. So you get NAS solution for only 200$ where other are starting somewhere over 350$(and I am not sure if there is HD already installed). Not to mention that no NAS storage solution gives you option to play games if you want!!!. But I have no knowledge of Linux and/or programming,so I wanted to see if somebody came already with this. And it would be great if it is some LIVE CD/DVD version,so no need to mess up with HD.
Darcotech from Switzerland
PS: Prices are from Switzerland but in USD.
A: This is a popular way to use Linux and the XBox. The Xebian distribution can be run from a live CD. By using the software mod technique and Xebian, you can begin experimenting with Linux while keeping your investment and risk to a minimum. As your skills progress, you may find that the hardware mod with a full-disk install is more reliable, easier to maintain, and allows you to upgrade your hard drive... all of which make for a better NAS appliance. Good luck!
Can I play backup games with the Linux software installed?
Is it possible to play backup copies from DVD-R on the Xbox after installing Linux?
Playing backup copies of games has nothing to do with Linux. You'll need a hack from someone else like XBox Scene (http://www.xbox-scene.com) to run backed up games: neither the MechAssault method nor Cromwell runs backup games. If you have a modchip that can run backup games, the you could install Linux too.
If I wanted to, could I install the Linux on my xbox the software modification way, then later on, do the hardware modification with the software modification of Linux still on?
If I wanted to, could I install the Linux on my xbox the software modification way, then later on, do the hardware modification with the software modification of Linux still on?
You could, but if you're going to do the hardware modification (presumably with a modchip with a switch), there there is no need for the software modification anymore. My advice: undo the software modification, then install your new modchip to choose between with Microsoft's BIOS and Cromwell. With the switch, the software modification becomes pointless.
What is a serial number?
A: A numeric or sometimes alphanumeric code assigned to a manufactured item at the time of assembly. Hope this helps.
Compatibility with newer xboxs
Hi,
I'm very interested in installing Linux on my xbox, however my xbox is very new (Xbox Crystal Purchased within a week ago) and would like to make sure the software modification will still work.
Thanks. Luke.
Very unlikely indeed. There are other softmods that do work on newer xboxes, but we do not provide them. Xbox-scene.com may help.
Linux in UnleashX\Other Dash
I have UnleashX replacement dashboard, can I have Linux as an option in the 'Applications' section of the dashboard?
what is wrong with my xbox?
i tried to prepar my xbox for linux instalation with the mech assault game. when i put it in and go to campaigne then choose emergency linux, my xbox starts to scroll down a bunch of info and there is a pengiun at the top of the screen. but before it ever finishes, it freezes at a piont were it says....job list turned off, and there is a blinking block next to it. it just sits there until the screen turns pitch black. then i have to turn the x box off. even after that, my xbox live icon is not a linux icon. please think this over and e-mail me at christopher003@hotmail.com
Emergency Linux just starts a small Linux OS that you can telnet into. It sounds like you want to do the "software modification", so you need to select 'Install Linux' instead of 'Emergency Linux' while in MechAssault. It is the 'Install Linux' script that replaces XBox Live with Linux.
optical digital audio output doesn't work under Debian
It works with DVD's under Xbox-OS but not under Debian. Maybe I have to configure it somehow? Any ideas?
I just got the optical audio output (from the HD advanced video thing or whatever). I did the whole alsa patch and install (maybe wasn't necessary), but nothing. Then I ran xmms, changed the audio output device to alsa. Then configure alsa to use "hw:0,2" as the device. Now to figure out how to do the same for mplayer.
Linux boot freezes after showing a green pixel near the top-right.
This happens if you're using a hacked BIOS and a HD pack. Either use your originial cables or flash your TSOP/modchip with Cromwell.
Installing Linux on an upgraded HDE in E: with data on F
I have a 120G HD, ideally, Id like to launch Linux from the dashboard...
how can I install linux on E: but not have it corrupt my existing data on F?? Do all xbox-linux distributions behave the same way??
Linux can easily be installed on the e: or f: partitions without corrupting anything on f: at all. Most distros will happily save all their files to e:\debian using a loopback filesystem. If, on the other hand, you want to just boot it from e: but still have a "native" linux install that can also be done with a little manual tinkering.
All distros do currently work the same way but some install scripts and install cds can be customised as long as you are careful to allow f: data to be kept. This is due to a little known kernel boot option called "hda=remap" which ignores the first sector of the boot drive and moves every other sector number down by one (e.g. 1 becomes 0, 2 becomes 1). That allows use to put our own partition table in sector 1 which isn't actually used for anything by the xbox
The following method is doable for xebian and not as complex as it sounds but and may require moving the files on f: to a safe place if you haven't already got some non partitioned (non f: drive) hard disk space. It also requires a slightly custom boot cd. However we are working with partition tables so be careful. Also dont make extended partitions for the fatx partitions as they may not work. Primary partitions will though
Sorry for the lengthy explaination. It doesn't take that long and is fairly simple when doing it.
1) download the xebian iso, extract the files to the hard disk, edit the linuxboot.cfg file and add the hda=remap option to any line that begins with "kernel". It may be best to ftp the file to the xbox first and edit it with whatever text editor is on the xbox and ftp it back as I don't think notepad will save in a format the bootloader will understand. Now burn that folder to cd/dvd.
2) Next download xbpartitioner from xbins. Then run it and find the hex code for the f: partition start and the partition size.
3) If you are using the full hd already then exit xbpartitioner move the f: files you want to keep elsewhere (games can be reinstalled later) and restart xbpartitioner. Select a more realistic size for f: leaving at least a few gigabytes for linux. XBPartitioner will change the f: size and format f: at the same time. Now write down the partition start sectors and lengths, which are in hex, for all partitions.
Convert them to decimal using whatever calculator/calc program you want. Subtract 1 from the start points and note the new numbers down (remember we are using hda=remap) and then add the file sizes to them and write total for each partition. That will give us the last sector for the e: and f: partition. Especially note the last sector for the f: partition.
4) Now boot the modified xebian cd, open a terminal and then:
dir /dev/hda*
It should *NOT* list the /dev/hda50(or 51,52 etc) but should just list /dev/hda. If it lists /dev/hda50 & so on you have done something wrong when editing the linuxboot.cfg file so try again.
su # Enter the root password to get superuser priviledges
umount /tmp/target
fdisk -u /dev/hda #The -u is important as it makes fdisk take the sector numbers we noted earlier
Add a new primary partition number 4 (the install script creates partitions 1 & 3 for linux so don't use them now) using the new sector numbers for the e: partition. If doesn't matter if you specify a partition type here as linux doesn't check that when mounting fatx anyway. Write the partition table to disk and then quit. If fdisk says reboot to use the new partition table then reboot, "su" and umount /mnt/target again and continue. Otherwise just continue.
mount /dev/hda4 /tmp/target -t fatx -o defaults,rw
cd /home/live cp /sbin/XBOXLinuxInstall ./XBOXLinuxInstall cp /usr/lib/xbox/partdisk.sh ./partdisk.sh nano XBOXLinuxInstall
Now edit XBOXLinuxInstall using nano so that underneath " if [ $METHOD == "2" ] :then " is changed from /usr/lib/xbox/partdisk.sh to /home/live/partdisk.sh
Also delete from "if [ $METHOD == "3" ] :then" through to the FSTAB and "fi" lines that are after it just to be safe. That way you can't even accidentally partition the whole xbox when you finally do so. Now save /home/live/XBOXLinuxInstall and then type "nano ./partdisk.sh"
now edit the "START=15633072" line so START equals the sector after the f: partition finishes(e.g. either the "old" last f: sector or the "new" last f: sector +1). Also edit the "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda seek=15633072 (etc...) line several pages down so "seek" equals the sector after the f: partition finishes. Save that as /home/live/partdisk.sh .
Now run "sh /home/live/XBOXLinuxInstall" and select option 2 and the install script will ignore the space where your f: data is and copy the boot files to the e:\debian xbox partition.
5) Almost there. Now edit the e:\debian\linuxboot.cfg file and add the hda=remap to any line starting with the word "kernel". Save that and run default.xbe. You now have the xebian linux distro installed and an f: partition that your dashboard can use.
Anyone that can think of a way of effectively shortening this answer but keeping all the points can do so.
how come i cant install the mechassault saved games
i downloaded the mechassault files, put them in my action replay memory card, and when i go to install them on the xbox, the screen just shakes around and does nothing. what am i doing wrong?
dashbord does not load
yesterday i was surfing the web with my xbox turned it off and this morning when i turn it on it freezes when the dashbord starts to appear, and starts over again. what do i do?
Leave it for a couple of hours - this is called the clock loop, and happens when the xbox is unplugged.
Software Mod, Telnet Comunication
I'm new to Linux, and i'am tring to software mod my Xbox, i've transfered the savegames to my xbox, and can run the Emergency Linux, but when i try to logon with Telnet, i'm informed that a connection can't be made. I'm using windows XP with a X-Over cable, is a hub required? what protocols/settings are required on the PC? is there a set procedure to follow?
A: A crossover cable should be fine. This is probably a simple IP addressing issue. Configure your PC to use 192.168.0.10 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Try pinging the XBox, just for fun. If you have any doubts about whether that cable really is a cross-over cable (I'd be suspicious), you can always use a hub and two regular Ethernet cables to get connected.

Xbox live
How do i uninstall the xbox live software that was added to my xobox via a game? This has meant i no longer have my linux dashboard
Can I install Mac OS X on my Xbox over Linux?
REPLY =>Would be nice to have some kind of body to your entry, eh? OK, you could do it, you'll need a working linux install and software called PearPC. As the xbox (as a pc) is a diffeent processor type to the Mac's (FYI; PowerPC) you'll need to use PearPC to emulate the PPC. You'll also need retail OSX install CD/DVD's too. This will be slow, at least 10x slower than the linux runs ATM, but cool. Show us some pics if you do.
ATI remote wonder
Anybody succeed with ATI remote wonder under xebian? I tried [3] (http://remotew.free.fr/linux_en.htm) but can not "make" it.

What is this Cromwell that you speak of, and where can I get a hold of it?
I need to know what Cromwell is and where I can obtain this sweet sweet peice of material. I am very intrested in modding my XBOX with Linux, but I love XBOX Live. What should I do?
It is available from the xbox linux download page.
It is a linux-only bios, and if you still want games, you will need a modchip to put it on too.
So, like what kind of mod chip do people reccomend...
xbox hardrives

Can I leave my XBOX turned on 24/7?
That's pretty much it. I've heard they can get pretty hot, but I'm interested in using my XBOX w/ Xbox-Linux as a fileserver that I just leave on all the time.
My uptime is over 80 days right now. Seems so ;)

New Hard Drive?
Just out of curiosity, would it be posiable to update the HD in the Xbox? Like say you wanted a larger one to run linux on would you be able to do that? And if so how?
thx jsworthm@adelphia.net
A: If you only want to run Linux, and you have performed the hardware mod and installed Cromwell, then yes, you can upgrade the hard drive. Please read the excellent documentation elsewhere on this site.
A2: Get a newer generation mod chip like smartxx v.2 or v.3 and a molex power spliter.
Can you run Counterstrike and Apache?
Can you play pc games like counter strike, or run a web server such as apache?
REPLY =>I don't know about CS, IIRC their are no linux binaries out (yet). But you can run a CS server fine, as with apache. Generally whatever you can do on linux you can do on xbox linux, (with little or no tweaking...) You could emulate or virtulise a windows envirment (either through WINE, or a full guest OS) and try and run CS on it. WINE probly won't work because of the auth bits of Steam at the moment.
You can run DOOM or Duke though...
Reply #2: Half-Life 1 should run successfully under Wine, so any version of Counterstrike BEFORE 1.6 (so, 1.5 for instance) should work *okay* too. I'm going to go home and try this first on my regular PC and see if this is really true. 1.6, due to the Steam stuff, *may* be a no-go: on the other hand, the (commercial?) gaming version of Wine, Cedega (http://www.transgaming.com/products_linux.php) says it supports 1.6. I don't have Cedega, so I can't test if it does run. Regardless, Counter-Strike, Half-Life, etc would have to run in software OpenGL mode, but that should be okay for normal NTSC/PAL TVs.
What you can do
Can you tell me what I have to do to install wine on the xbox with linux or can you give me links that give step by step tutorials about how to install wine on the xbox with linux
Well, assuming you've installed Xebian 1.0.x or 1.1.x and you have access to the internet through your XBox's ethernet port, it should be as easy as opening up a shell and typing 'apt-get install wine'. If it complains, then you might have to run 'apt-get install libwine' first. If you're without a direct internet connection, then there is no *easy* way to do this.
Install Linux thru SSH
Hi,
I load Xebian on my XBox. I am able to connect using SSH (on my PC) to install Linux on my XBox without having to install a keyboard on my XBox. The command line(terminal) works perfectly.
I would like to know if there is any way to run X on my PC using SSH ? I want to see the X environment of my XBox on my PC. Is that possible ?
Thank you.
A1: try -X option : ssh -X user@host
A2: SSH by itself does not provide the graphics libraries to support displaying Xwindows apps on your PC. You'll need an Xwindows server on your PC (Hummingbird Exceed, etc.), which can receive data either over the ssh channel or directly over IP. Alternatively, you could use VNC - much easier to install and maintain.
Old Xbox, New Dash
I have an older xbox of which the kernel is older but somehow the dashboard updated all on its own, is there any hope for me? Kernel Ver: 1.00.4035.01 Dash Ver: 1.00.5960.01
can you tell me how to install wine on an xbox that has linux or give me links to tutorials or guides that tell me what to do to install wine on an xbox with linux
Can I read xbox HD on my PC?
I own Linux and i want to know if there is a kernel patch to mount fatx partition on my PC? Thanks!
A1: Remember - you can't read a drive from an xbox on a pc without doing the crazy hot-swapping protection circumvention stuff - I'd sort out that end first...
A2: Once the lock issue is under control (or you've got your hot-swap mojo workin'), then yes, the FATX drivers are available as kernel patches in the XBox-Linux CVS. The 2.4 driver works best, but the latest 2.6 kernel series should work too (2.6.11, etc.).
Why cant i telnet into my xbox??
I put the software linux on and i cant telnet into my xbox. I used flash fxp to try to telnet. What am i doing wrong????
FlashFXP is an ftp program, not a telnet client.
Try running 'telnet <ip address>' from an MS DOS command prompt.
Check also that you can ping the xbox by IP address. If it is on 192.168.0.x your PC must have an IP address that is on the 192.168.0. subnet.
Which Type of Linux can I install?
I was just wondering if I can install any version of linux after using the software method, or if it has to be a special x-box specific version like ed's debian.
A: The XBox has slightly non-standard hardware compared to a traditional i386 PC. You could theoretically use any Linux distro, as long as your kernel was built specifically for the XBox. Cross-installs are fairly difficult, though, so you should stick to one of hte pre-built XBox distros your first time out.
I flashed my 256mb stick with the mechassault 1.0 installer, but it does not contain
any "install linux" game saved data. It seems blank inside. I can see mechassault 1.0 installer
on the xbox memory. Any suggestions?
A: Try using a different image. I have a 64Mb "Universal Smart Drive" and it does the same thing if I attempt to flash it with the MechInstaller-1.0-FATX-64MB.img data. It works just fine if I use the MechInstaller-1.0-FATX-8MB-to-32MB.img file. It doesn't seem to harm the drive at all - once I copied the game save data onto the X-Box I was able to reformat the drive in Windows and all 64Mb was available.
Copying Mech Installer
How do I install the full version/ what should I use?
I would like to install the full Linux system on my XBOX and be able to keep the ability to play games. What is the best distribution for me to use? Is there an available tutorial for installing this distribution. Thanks for your help.
A: RTFM, baby. This site is chock full of excellent documentation.
Mexican Xbox
It turns out that I have the Mexican Xbox (02). According to the instructions this will not work using the software method, "any Xbox (except for the Japanese version or the Mexican version)". Is there away to install linux, using either the software, or hardware method.
A: You may need to use a modchip. If you install this with an on/off switch, you can choose to run either XBox games or Linux. Without a switch, you would only be able to run Linux.
about downgrading
How do i downgrade the xbox dashboard. i have the dashboard files but cant get them on the hdd using fatxplorer due to the program closing when i click on read hard disk. is there a soultion so i can direcly copy files on to the xbox hard drive?
--I am in a similar situation, but presently trying to locate some older dashboard files. Where did you find yours?
Using PC JoyStick for XBOX
Can I use my PC JoyStick for XBox?
-Answer: you should be able to use a USB Joystick under Linux, but NOT while running an XBox Game.
flashed tsop
My xbox was not "prepared" by the two methods described. My t.s.o.p. chip was flashed so i dont belive linux is anywhere any my system. I would like to be able to boot into linux and the distro i choose from the menue of my dashboard.
Then, you have it easy. Boot the linux distribution (xebian or gentoox) cd of your choice by just inserting it, and follow its documentation to install it, and add a link to your dash to launch its loader XBE.
Is there an AIM compatible Instant Messenger program for Linux?
Yes, GAIM.
copying games to hard-drive
Is it possible to copy games to the hard drive? if so, how?
yes; if you have softmodde you xbox with e.g. unleashx you can go into the system settings an scroll right down and it sayes "copy games to hdd"
p.s. unleash x is alot better than evox if you are soft modding and you cant decide go with unleashx
version
how do i check which version my xbox is?
By reading the Version howto, in the documentation section.
Cromwell BIOS 2.32
I installed a Spider Mod Chip and flashed the BIOS. It now gives me a prompt to insert CD and press Button A? Also with the chip switch off it says to contact Microsoft Tech.
If you used cromwell 2.32, it will let you insert a Linux CD, such as Xebian or GentooX, which will then boot.
if you unlocked the harddisk with the spider 'flashbios', that explains why it will not load the MS dashboard any more. The error code for this is '05'. If you have a different number, you may have a different problem.
Getting a mouse and keyboard on Xbox
How would I be able to do that?
By reading the howtos. You need an xbox->USB adaptor.
You said that you wouldnt be able to access xbox live from the dashboard, but could you access it from a game, like Halo 2.
It sounds like you're doing the software mod. In that case, you CAN'T us XBox Live PERIOD! You would need to have a modchip with a switch to go between Cromwell and the MS BIOS. In that case, you don't need to do the software method at all and "XBox Live" will still be an option.
Newbie question: development of 'hardware method' for v.1.6?
In my country it is hard to find anything but version 1.6. I'd like to use it just for Linux but would prefer to save the cost of a modchip. Is a modchip-less hardware method going to be developed for this version? Forgive me if this is a stupid question because there is no possible way it could be carried out.
Unfortunately, a proper chipless hardware method, like bios flashing, isn't going to happen for 1.6 xboxes, as the chip which holds the bios is no longer a writable flash rom chip, so it would be necessary to install a modchip if you want a hardware solution. Sorry!
