My approach to a home media center was that the all the streaming software resides on a central file server feeding remote machines that require nothing more than standard web browsers with appropriate audio/video plugins.
The server itself is a standard Apache/MySql/Php set up, with the web site composed of the following php project codes :

And you wind up with something like this:
Much of the code has been 'tuned' to allow access to local net-drives. Enjoy the demo and toys.
