XBOX freezes on linux install from mechinstaller
I am using a 1.0-1.1 xbox with a homemade usb-xbox cable, and an 8 mb memory card, with a spliced usb head. I have transferre all the linux files to my HD, but after starting mechassault and clicking "Install Linux", the screen and music freeze and the 'Box needs to be reset. This happens both for "Emergency Linux" and "Restore Dashboard" also. How can I get past this problem? please email me. gojukebox@gmail.com

Stuck in telnet
I am in telnet and i have succecfully logged into my xbox through username root password xbox but when i type in xbox_tool-a it doesnt work although when i leave the -a out it does work but says that i have to install and enable i2c-interface for the xbox what does this mean can anybody help? email-isupermikeli@hotmail.com
The answer may be to put a space between xbox_tool and the -a

I see that the Mexican XBOX's not working with XBOX-Linux, has been erased from the software mod page. Does this mean that I can use MechInstaller with my Mexican XBOX?

hello anyone, i am having trouble connecting to my xbox threw telnet, i am using windows xp and running windows telnet. i typer 'open 192.168.3.0' and it says 'could not open connection to host, on port 23. a socket operation socket operation was attempted to an unreachable host.
i dont no what to do but i dont think i can do anything els with this unless i connect to a telnet please help

I modified a controller to have the USB connectors and plugged in my Creative Muvo TX256. Xbox formateed it OK and I loaded up the MechInstaller using Ozmemory.
When I plugged into the Xbox, and going to MEMORY, I can see the MechInstallaer 1.0 but only have the options PERSONALIZE and ERASE. No SAVE option. I am now stuck! No joy!
BTW, I am in Singapore. Anyone else here trying this out?

Well, there is a chance you are either using the wrong size file, or your flash drive isn't fully compatable. First, try writing the smallest file on the drive, then if that doesn't work, work your way up to the biggest file. If none of those work, then your drive isn't fully compatable... meaning, it's either too big, or too small. Anyway, you shouldn't have a problem just using the other files. Since it doesn't show you which one to use, this can sometimes be confusing and annoying, but it can be done.
As for the Telnet... I believe it's 192.168.0.3, not 192.168.3.0, so that may be the problem.

BUT WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU HAD XBOX LIVE AND WHEN IT UPDATED EVERY SO OFTEN IT WOUNT LET YOU RUN LINUX ON THE XBOX.
when I put in my MechAssault game and sellect Campaign than "Run Linux" a message pops up and says "cant run <Run Linux> on hard drive" what do I do or what can I do to make it run on my xbox. Try downgrading your dashboard as shown in the software method HOWTO. It's near the bottom.
Does software method work on all xbox versions?
I am very foolish and I want to buy a new xbox to start this and in the faq it says 1.6 can't do the software method while it doesnt say that anywhere else
Yeah, you are foolish. If I mention once that I'm an American, does that fact change just because I don't constantly remind you of where I'm from? Of course not. 1.6 DOES NOT WORK WITH MECHASSAULT. Is that clear enough?
Actually, it does...it works quite well. I have used 007, MA, and SC to mod quite a few 1.6 boxes.....both A and B
-> That is true. 1.6 is definitely soft-moddable with Mechassault. I've done it a few times myself. I just modded a brand new xbox last week. Bought September, 2005.
Help with softmod for my x box
I just bought an x box and I started to work of softmod with it. I did come accros the flickering screen and the blank screen. Dont know what to do next, and how do I go about doing it. Can some one please directe me to a web page or send me info on what to do. Thanks franko

Help with a flickering screen problem

I get the flickering screen when loading Emergency Linux, and when I wait it never turns green. It seems to flash a whole bunch of lines of something and then just blank out (still flickering). I've let it sit for over an hour and still nothing. How long should I wait for the green light?
Not really sure what to do next. I plan to eventually do the TSOP hardware mod, but since I can't even seem to get Emergency Linux to run, where do I go from here?

"Dashboard Pardon may be Corrupted"
What do I do if I got somebody else to make the xbox mechinstaller memory unit, but when i try to install it i get the error message that says "install linux failed" or "dashboard Pardon may be Corrupted." If anybody can help me please email me at JPATTON10@chamillionaire.com

Yes, it is. You need to downgrade your dashboard by following the instructions in the Software Method HOWTO. It's near the bottom.
MechAssault..grrrr
Im from Qc and ive been running around in circle trying to get the ms23001l version of mechassault. Well you know what, im probably the expert on ways to find that cd right now, but still unsucessfull! We got 3 xbox to mod, and we are missing that mechassault. Is anyone have an idea, or can rip a version that we can ftp, it will be very appreciated.

I don't know if linux would be running, but i'm from quebec, and I didn't find it too. You may want to try a hot-swap, it's kinda tricky and a little dangerous. But it works really fine for me. Try finding a guide on xbox-scene.com The timing is like 2-3secs to do the manoeuvre.
MechAssault Linux installer unable to work

Mech Assault Issues
I have the same problem as the guy listed above with the partition corrupted thing. The Emergency Linux file works fine but the install and restore files don't. I read about downgrading the dashboard but, I am new to linux and the linux commands so I find the short tutorial hard to follow. In addition to this I cannot find a dashboard image anywhere.

You need to do a Google search for original xbox dashboard. Also, try searching for xboxdash.xbe.
Do I NEED a USB device and adapter, or will this work?

Will it work for me to get the driver, and use a memory card to put the filesaves onto? I have an action replay memory card, but I lost the action replay USB device almost as soon as I bought it(at my grannies house and she cant find it).
So will that adapter from llama.com work?
Both links are to the OPPOSITE adaptor you need (with MALE USB normal); the adaptor you found allows you to use your XBox controller on your normal PC. If I know correctly what you're trying to accomplish, you need the adaptor with a male XBox end and FEMALE USB normal. Once you have Linux installed, this adaptor will be your only means for connecting USB Keyboards, memory sticks, etc. Both sites you've looked at offer this adaptor: lik-sang (http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=83&products_id=2154) and llamma (http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=80)

I have a 512mb Jumpdrive
I can't seem to get any of the mechinstaller images to work on it.does anyone know where I can get a 512mb mechInstaller image?
I have the same problem, the img is written to the file and Xbox reads the MechInstaller but no saved games :( perhaps this USB no goodo.
Another person here with a 512Mb USB memory stick. I can put a 256Mb image on the stick (Dane-Elec 512Mb), the memory stick shows mechinstaller1.0 as the label but no saved games. I suppose if there were a 512Mb image this would work? I am now going to hunt down a 256Mb or lesser compatible USB memory stick to try again. :(

HELP IM STUCK
Okay everyone, I need some help. I created a usb device with my xbox controller and memory card. When I plug it into my pc it says "new device found" then it attemps to build a driver. I intalled the Ozmemory thing, and the WinRar. I can see the .img files using the WinRar but i dont know how to get them onto my memory unit. Im completly stumped. Can someone help me please?!?!?

Question
I put Linux on my xbox and accidentally deleted part of the hard drive. I was planning to hook up another working Xbox hard drive to a computer, get an image of that drive, and then copy those files on to my broken Xbox hd. Is there any software that can do this? I have access to Windows XP and Knoppix Linux and can install another distro if nessasary.
-- You can always try a hot-swap to have access to your hard-drive. That's how I modded my xbox. It's a little dangerous, but there are several guide on xbox-scene.com But they forgot one important information, the timing to do this it's like 2-3 secs max

I tried the mechassault installer and all i got was it freezing. Then I've tried x-dsl and all it did was flicker and blank screen then the light goes orange and the tray opens up. Yet no linux on my xbox.

ok i downloaded US_MechAssaul_Run_Linux_270092 and UXE_Installer_MA_FINAL_Adoubeur. Now with US_MechAssaul_Run_Linux_270092 this one don't work and with UXE_Installer_MA_FINAL_Adoubeur AR say that its already in file so i guess it the file that say linux installer. But machassaul don't have a load up menu for linux. also i download both files off the net. what am i doing wrong help
Emergency linux won't work - Please Help
I am based in the UK trying to run Linux on two PAL XBoxes. I obtained these second hand but I do not believe that they have been modified in any way previously.
I have the correct version of Mech Assault (CD laser etch - MS02301L)
I have the Mega X-key with the Linux Savegames that I have copied to the XBoxes successfully.
The XBoxes are:
K: 1.00.4817.01
D: 1.00.4920.01
Prod ID: 612 1175752 23905
Mfg. Date: 29-09-2002 (presumably Version 1.1) I expected this to work without problems.
K: 1.00.4034.01
D: 1.00.5960.01
Prod ID: 423 2093687 21003
Mfg. Date: 06-03-2002 (presumably Version 1.0). This appears to have been connected to XBox Live and from the high Dashboard version I expected problems.
On both of these I load up MechAssault, Select 'Emergency Linux' and press 'A'. The machines lock and need to be powered off.
I have tried connecting via the ethernet port in case something has happened in the background but there is no response on 192.168.0.3 (or indeed 1-5).
Any and all suggestions very welcome! (++john_mangan+@+hotmail.com++)
Kernel/dash downgrade?
I have a 5101 kernel version, and a 5659 dashboard version, now I've been reading this link (http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Software_Method_HOWTO#Making_the_Xbox_Linux-compatible) for the pas hour, and I can't seem to figure out what I need to do. I know I don't need a chip (or am I wrong?), but I can't seem to find docs about how to downgrade the kernel/dash. Help anyone? (I'm going to use EvoX, and I figured Xbox-Linux and EvoX follow the same rules.)

I own a uk version 1.1 xbox with the linux files on the hard drive (via Action Replay). I also own a copy of the original MechAssault game. When trying to install linux, the xbox just freezes and needs to be reset.

I am aware that i need to downgrade my dashboard but have no idea how to go about doing this. I have read many threads from various different websites and still dont have a clue. I dont know how to go about creating a telnet.
If anyone could give up any advice as to how i am to set up a telnet or as to how to go about downgrading my dashboard i would be very grateful as this is getting me extremely frustrated.

Telnet means that you need to plug your xbox into an ethernet, then go to another computer on that network, open a command prompt window and type 'telnet 192.168.0.3' Now, if that helper computer is configured for some other network segment than 192.168.0.X, you may need to diddle around with that configuration too. First try 'ping 192.168.0.3' and if that works ok then you can do the telnet to 192.168.0.3. You can change the helper computer's IP address from the control panel / network adaptors under TCP/IP for that network adaptor.
And I too am still looking for a dashboard image, stuck at "linux won't boot' We've had this x-box since before dirt, so the legal part is covered...

Unable to load the files
I copied the file to my xbox using action replay and a usb flash disk, and i managed to copy them to my xbox harddrive.
They show up in the mechwarrior game, but whenever i try to open a profile it just says "Unable to load <Emergency Linux>. Press A to continue." Replace Emergency linux with any other save name.
I have a xbox 1.0 and i think that is the right version of the game. My dashboard is too new to install linux, but shouldnt i be able to atleast run the emergency linux? Is it possible that the save games didnt get correctly installed? i downloaded them from here!! Thanks.
- EDIT - I found out why it was giving that error, you gotta delete everything related to mechwarrior (old saves or mechs), after that everything that i tried to run froze.
However, the game automatically adds a "mechwarrior" profile when you start it with the linux saves, so go to the profiles and delete the "mechwarrior" profile. When i do that i can run Emergency linux, but all i can see is a screen flickering and the music keeps playing, but kinda broken....
a little edit to clarify my situation: Whenever i try to run either of the saves, my xbox either freezes, or opens a screen to select the mission, and to press A or B to go back. If i press A, it shows an image flickering and the music gets broken. I know my XBOX ip and i know how to use telnet, but the xbox is unreachable, either to telnet or ping, in any of the situations... even if i try to run emergency linux. Is there some kind soul that can help me running emergency linux?
Any advices???

Ok well im 15 and i know quite about xboxes computers networks and whatnot. I have modded many xboxes but not this was i used unleashx and run linux ran fast quick and easy loved it but unfortunatly coulded get full linux on it so i want to do it this way i am modding a version 1.4 i have the files on my xbox via action replay and madcats memory card (it works i made sure). I spliced a break away cable to a usb male. and cracked open my xbox and put in a usb port for fun i have the driver in stalled on ym pc and it works fine. I am just wondering circa how long does it take i am letting it run as we speak but it appears to be frozen i dont hear any unusualy activity fromt eh fan or harddrive i am worried i am doin it wrong. i onlyhave this game till tommorrow because i am renting it. Everything Freezes
I've been trying to install linux on my xBox for about 2 days now.I finally got everything I need for it, Action Replay, and downloaded all the correct files. I also made sure I had the correct version of Mechassault. I then copied the Linux files to my xBox, and loaded up Mecassault. However when I press hit emergency linux to downgrade my xBox (I have a 5960 dashboard) all it does is freezes. Any ideas? You can e-mail me at robotking34@yahoo.com.
Dashboard DownGrade
I have one of the Pre XboxLive Xboxes Updated to play on Xboxlive so Ive figured that i need to downgrade my dashboard and ive look around and i get the idea that i can use the xboxlive installer built in to Splinter Cell or something to do this but i dont no how? or is this wrong? i cant find an image of an old C: or the files any help will be greatly appreciated yellow_onion@orcon.net.nz

Plz Help Dash gone
After recieving error 12 and hotswapping to my computer everything ran well. I backed up my hd and installed linux. Afterward I turned on my xbox and it goes to the X at the start and afterwards no dash. I tried reinstalling but when i enter xbrowser it does not appear. Has anyone had this problem? PLZ HELP

Telnet problem
Hi, I have a xbox that is not letting me telnet to it. in cmd (Command Prompt), i type in: telnet 192.168.0.3 (the xbox does this: ipconfig eth0 192.168.0.3) and i get this error: Connecting to 192.168.0.3...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connection failed
for more notes, the last five lines of Emergency Linux displays this:
- ipconfig eth0 192.168.0.3
- /sbin/pure-ftpd -A -linux
- telnetd
- /bin/sh
sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
afterwards, it displays / # with a blinking box
The xbox power circle is Orange throughout the whole Emergency Linux process.
System Info is this: K: 1.00.4034.01 D: 1.00.5960.01
I (believe) the xbox had the correct kernel and dashboard when i first bought it (bought it brand new)
