Cannot Use Boot CD: Permission Denied

I have a successful install of Xebian 1.0.3 on my gamesave partition. When I try to use the boot disk (boot_fatx_e), Cromwell starts the cd as Linux normally does, and it appears that Linux is starting up. However, after a couple seconds of messages scrolling past the screen, I get the error "Permission denied", followed by "Attempted to kill init!". Even after I booted Xebian back up with the install CD, and changed Linux not to autologin, I still get the same error. Can someone please help me?

I have solved the problem with a crude method. Luckily, before I even did any modding, I unlocked my Xbox's hard drive with Cromwell and backed all my data up. After restoring my Xbox back to it's factory settings, I re-installed Xebian 1.0.3, and it worked like a charm. Also, I did not need to use the boot disk, as Cromwell can do this automatically.

cannot adjust volume via oss apps

When using console based mediaplayers/frontends such as playmp3list and cplay, the volume control has no effect. Opening alsamixer or using amixer can set PCM volume fine, but anything looking for OSS is not getting mapped properly. Any ideas on where to start with fixing this? -glurgle

As a workaround, I've found that MOC (music on console) has great support for alsa, including proper volume control

Can not type the password 'xebian' when promted

I downloaded the latest version of Xebian and XDSL. My keyboard and mouse seem to work fine. I can type 'su' as instruction in the command prompt but when promted for the password I can not type anything with my keyboard or the virtual keyboard. All I can do is press enter. Which kicks back an authentication error. Xdsl doens't work with my HDTV so I need Xebian which at least loads as far as the desktop. If I can get it installed and configured, I'll be happy.

UNIX-like systems – and especially any command-line based tools in them which ask for passwords – generally do not echo anything back to the user while typing in the password. This is a security measure: someone looking over your shoulder cannot easily determine the length of your password simply by looking at the dots (or whatever you were expecting to see.) Despite the fact that nothing will appear on the screen while typing the password, it will be accepted if typed in correctly.

Mounting the FATX Partitions

I just got done with my install, and the only problem I ran into was in 3.4, mounting the Xbox HD partitions. I added my fstab entries and explained how a user can find their partitions. This is my first time editing a Wiki.. Hopefully I didn't screw anything up =)

Howto completely uninstall Ed's exbian

Please

Which type of install did you do? If you installed to E: then booting the install cd, giving 'mkdir /mnt/e; mount /dev/hda50 /mnt/e; rm -R /mnt/e/debian' should get rid of most of it. [warning - do this at your own risk!] - Jesu

Xebian isn't simply uninstalled by removing that directory--it's just the bootloader. To remove all the linux files, do "rm -R /dev/root" while booted into the LiveCD. This prevents errors when trying to reinstall Xebian. -Sky

Howto Upgrade an already installed Xebian to the latest version

Well, I don't know how to do this... but if YOU know: please share your knowledge in this wiki. Thanks :-)

Just done an upgrade, with this easy-to-follow method: copy data off; delete rootfs file; install new version. Yeah, great, isn't it... - Jesu

How to install Xebian without CD-burning

If you have a modded xbox, you could in principle tranfer everything to HD and start your installation to ingame E:partition via dashboard/default.xbe. Does this work?

No, does not work, panics when Linux boots and starts looking for the CD.

As othe distros are offering as easy install as "Copye files to " modified xbox.. (via ftp), are there any plans to have xebian operate same way ?

I think it should be possible to copy the image of the root filesystem and the swap to E: and boot it. At least in a modded xbox. Is there available this form of installation? It should be the fastest way to install.

Mechinstaller / 2.6

Anyone know how to boot a 2.6 kernel using the Mechinstaller? Thanks, Jes

Using a 2.6.x kernel isn't recommended for most people since the FATX driver is broken under 2.6. This is (among other reasons) why Xebian and Dynebolic still use 2.4 kernels. If you have Cromwell installed and use your XBox just as a computer (no games), then take a look at XFedora. If you're using MechAssault (and thus retaining Microsoft's BIOS and paritions), stick with the 2.4 kernel.

Installed Xebian from DVD

I installed to the Game Save partiiton and it was all working fine untill I realized that it deleted two of my partitions. My F drive is completely gone along with another (hda55 and hda 56). How can I get them back? Are all of my save files gone?

Someone please help!

If you used the Game Save partition option, it shouldn't have touched your F drive. Are you sure you picked this option? If your F drive has disappeared I believe you may have lost all your Save files. I'm not exactly sure and I could be wrong but that seems like the likely conclusion from the "HowTo".

Grrr...

It seems you should not EVER install with the third option. Now I'm sure that someone here knows how to install xebian so that the cd is not needed. I'm not one of them. I used the third option and now I am getting error code 13. So my box is absolutely bricked until I can find a way to reformat the drive and/or change the TSOP. Now then, this is the XBOX-LINUX wiki and I expected to find a way to install LINUX on my XBOX. Instead, I had to guess my way through 2/3rds of the entire process and I have finally arrived at a sledgehammer and my hard-earned brickware. BOO!!! >:-(

According to the guide:

"If you wish to use the entire drive for linux, thus removing the ability to run any regular Xbox code (that includes games), you can by choosing the 3rd option, instruct the installer to wipe out the entire disk and create 2 partitions (1 for swap and 1 for the linux)."

Um, yeah, that really is a bad idea... Maybe it works with the Cromwell BIOS, but without a hardmod of some sort there's no way the system will boot after that treatment.

Look up XBoxHDM, you should be able to rebuild your HDD with it.

Xebain Xampp Web Server

Firstly, thanks for the Xebian guide. I love how the lights on the xbox turn orange - its like it's saying "I'm not happy but I'm still working..."

For those looking to turn their xbox into a web server (and are newish to Linux like me) here's a couple of things to start with:

Use the guide at the following address to install XAMPP [[1] (http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/xampp.htm)]

And this video tells you how to add stuff to the startup [[2] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d39izaupvEg)]
