Xbox USB Compatibility List
From Xbox-Linux
This is a list of USB mass storage devices (Xbox Memory Unit (http://www.xbox.com.au/com_au/downloads/pdf/Memory_Unit_manual.pdf) replacements) that work with the original Xbox operating system and the dashboard, so that you can use them to transfer savegames from your existing computer to the Xbox.
Please observe that this is not a Linux compatibility list. Once you run Linux, all Linux-supported USB mass storage devices will work as for a normal PC. This list only applies to devices you can use to transfer savegames. That is, it is a list of devices which are recognized as memory cards by the MS Dashboard.

Notes
- Caveat emptor (Anandtech (http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2549)):
The problem with USB flash drives, however, is that the controller and the flash memory are rarely constant within the manufacturing of a single drive. In order to keep costs down and maintain a steady supply, most manufacturers obtain their controllers and memory from multiple sources, so buying one drive doesn't necessarily mean that you'll get the same combination of controller and memory that we test here.
Luckily, for the most part, this only applies to the lower end and mid-range flash drives. Even then, manufacturers guarantee some minimum level of performance, generally described somewhere on the packaging itself. But because of this variation in chip suppliers and/or types, performance will vary more than what we're used to between models of the exact same product. The higher end performance-optimized drives don't usually have this problem because the manufacturers put performance on a higher pedestal, thus they will always choose the same high performing chips to be used in these offerings. The manufacturing quantities are also much lower for the high-end, high-performance units, so having multiple sources for the controller and flash memories isn't as important.
- So, just knowing the manufacturer and model may not be enough to ensure that your USB Mass Storage device is really compatable. Knowing what controller the device uses, as well as device-specific parameters like drive geometry may prove much more useful. If you have flash drive with a see-through case and you can see the internal circuit board, then physical inspection is probably the most reliable way to determine the controller. If not, then a utility like CheckUDisk (http://www.wbj3000.com/checkudisk.rar) may give some insight.
- As for determining the drive's geometry, all USB Mass Storage devices use SCSI-over-USB, so using SCSI commands like GET CAPACITY, GET FORMAT CAPACITY and MODE SENSE are probably the best way to get this information, rather than from other not-so reliable sources like the Partition Table or OS. In fact, if we had some way of intercepting the USB packets from the Xbox, it probably wouldn't be that hard to determine exactly why certain devices are incompatable. For more information on the SCSI subset that USB Mass Storage Devices are supposed to support, see: USB Mass Storage Class Overview (http://www.usb.org/developers/devclass_docs/usb_msc_overview_1.2.pdf) and USB Mass Storage Class Compliance (http://www.usb.org/developers/devclass_docs/MSC-compliance-0_9a.pdf).
- The Vendor and Product ID's mentioned in the above table can be obtained (in Linux) either using lsusb, which is text-based and very commonly found, or using usbview, an X-Window application which is less common. You can also look at /proc/bus/usb/devices. Each device entry starts with a 'T:' record. This file sometimes shows strings that lsusb doesn't display.
- USB storage devices that are not detected properly (or at all) on Windows systems have a good chance of being repaired by following the tutorial at this link (http://www.4p8.com/eric.brasseur/suse9.1_usb_stick.html) (requires Unix).
- A commonly used brand is "Memory in Black". This is often abbreviated MiB, which unfortunately conflicts with an international standard abbreviation of "milibyte" (1048576 bytes).
- Many USB devices come with a "low level format" tool. It is usually a good idea to run this before formatting your USB mass storage unit with the MS Dashboard. See the note on the Transcend units below.
- If your USB stick is automatically recognized as a "Solid State Disk" by Windows, there is a very good chance it will also be recognized by the MS Dashboard.
- Some MP3 players may work, but be sure you can either afford to lose it, or are able to re-install the firmware. Sometimes the Xbox will completely reformat the MP3 player firmware, thus rendering it useless.
- Please be specific when describing devices. For example, there are at least 4 different Lexar JumpDrive models (JumpDrive, JumpDrive Secure, JumpDrive Trio, and JumpDrive 2.0 Pro). If possible, also specify the device's controller and geometry (see above).
- In many cases - notably the Transcend JetFlash - the default setting of the controlling ROM puts an otherwise compatible USB stick into a state where the Xbox calls it "damaged". Examining the stick in a Linux machine with fdisk shows that there are "stub" security and encrypted partitions as well as the main storage volume. To fix this it may be sufficient to delete (in fdisk) the stub partitions AND the storage partition, then recreate one big partition. No stubs. This worked for 128MiB and 256 MiB units Transcend TS128MJFLASHA, TS256MJFLASHA Vendor Id: 0c76, Product Id: 0005. It may need to be supplemented by a low-level format with the "mformat" utility on the Transcend CD supplied with these devices.
- Identify your Transcend JetFlash drive here -> http://www.transcendusa.com/Products/ModList.asp?Lang=EN&FieldNo=2&CatNo=4
- Note that this does not appear to work with the 64MB unit, TS64MJFLASHA (VID:PID=0c76:0005). Its default setting has only one partition, although that partition does not include all of the blocks available on the drive. Deleting the partition and creating a single partition that includes all blocks does not work. Performing a format with "mformat" restores the drive back to the default state, i.e. a single partition that does not include all of the available blocks. Initialization of the FAT16 filesystem was tried with both the WindowsXP and the Linux (mkdosfs) formatting tools. - pg
- UPDATE: No success with the TS256MJFLASHA (Vendor Id: 0c76, Product Id: 0005, Revision Number: 1.00). Linux fdisk v2.11y doesn't show stub or security partitions, only one partition (looks like behaviour described above for 64MB JetFlashA). Tried also formatting with mFormat.exe (565248 bytes, Jan 2 2003) with no luck. Xbox always says "The memory unit you inserted isn't functioning; it may be damaged". Other memory units (like the Captiva USB BAR) work perfectly for me.
- Exactly same problem with TS128MJF2A.
- Layout of disk for the failing JetFlashA, as reported by fdisk, follows:
Disk /dev/sda: 259 MB, 259276800 bytes
8 heads, 62 sectors/track, 1020 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 496 * 512 = 253952 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 1020 252929 6 FAT16
- There are now 6 Transcend JetFlash models with the same name - to tell them apart you have to look at the part number, or by the pictures on the link above.
JetFlash - p/n TSxxxJFLASH, JetFlashA - p/n TSxxxJFLASHA, JetFlashM - p/n TSxxxJFLASHM (mp3 player), and the new JetFlash 2.0 - p/n TSxxxJF2y (fast - USB 2.0 compliant), where xxx is the size of the device in megabytes or gigabytes and 'y' is a color code.
- *UPDATE* - A Jetflash 2.0 TS1GJF2B has been successfully used. Used [Eraser http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/] to thoroughly format drive.
- So far, it doesn't look like any Transcend USB 2.0 compliant devices are working. Until someone proves otherwise, is may be a good idea to stick with USB 1.1 compliant drives (that's "compliant", not to be confused with "compatible"). - pg
- Paradigit (aka Apacer)' 256MB USB2.0 memory stick - It would be nice to know exactly which Apacer model this corresponds to. The Apacer english website lists the following usb models:
HANDY STENO TN202, HANDY STENO 2.0, HANDY STENO 1.1 (two different versions), MEGA STENO 2.0, MEGA STENO 1.1, AUDIO STENO BP300, and AUDIO STENO NV400. - pg
- Shortly the list of devices will be tabled in columnar form, so that it will be clear which devices are listed as working by one person, and as not working by another.
- A suggested list of steps to better guarantee useful test results: Boot Xbox to dashboard. Connect memory stick. Observe if the Xbox recognizes the memory stick (might indicate that "damaged" device has been formatted). Navigate the Xbox dashboard to read contents of memory stick. Note the number of free blocks. If you have some previous game save info on your Xbox HD, copy one of your saved games to the memory stick. Disconnect the memory stick. Reconnect the memory stick. Verify that Xbox recognizes memory stick again (some problem memory sticks will not work on reconnect or the Xbox will see it as "damaged" again, etc). If you are able to view the save game data on the reconnected memory stick, then the stick probably is working OK with the Xbox. -dcg
- (2GB) A-DATA FLASH DRIVE PD2-G20 Notes: This comes with a (windows) utility to partition the drive into an encrypted partition and a "public" partition. Partition the usb drive with the utility (this only seems to work on 1 of my 3 systems, the others just hang). Don't assign a password, although you can add in a volume label if you want. Sticking this in the xbox will auto-format the first partition. The second partition you can use on your PC (at least in winxp). This way you can have one memory stick that works with both the xbox & your pc! PLEASE TEST THAT THE XBOX DOESNT FORMAT THE SECOND PARTITION UPON INSERTION BEFORE MOVING DATA THERE.
{Also the 2GB A-DATA PD9 Series works when following these instructions, you must download the
format utility from A-Data first. Just Google "A-Data Flash Utility"}
- *UPDATE* Lexar JumpDrive Secure 256MB must be reformatted as FAT32 on PC before being able to use it with the Xbox. After formatting, a screen on the Xbox will come up saying something like the memory unit has been erased. After that, it will work everytime.
- I ended up breaking my Creative Labs MuVo TX FM 128MB MP3 Player because the USB Female connector/Xbox male connector was weird and I had to bend my MuVo mercilessly upwards for it to work. I don't know if this was the MP3 Player or just the cable. Contributed by: LoopyDood
- My Creative Labs MuVo TX FM 128MB MP3 Player does work in my v1.6 Xbox
- "M-Systems Flash Disk Pioneers" chipsets don't work (Xbox reports as damaged). These are used in a variety of sticks e.g. I have both a Sony 64MB Micro Vault and an IBM 256MB (FRU 22P9031) but lsusb under Linux reports them both as ID 08ec:0011 due to the same chipset.
